Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation recently awarded $25,000 to Grand Rapids Community College, marking the third time GRCC has received funding from the legendary band. The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area has awarded its first round of competitive grants for 2021. CFHZ disbursed $100,000 among five organizations, with the aim of enhancing their ability to meet the needs of area seniors, students, patients, and youth.
Grand Rapids Community College, which recently kicked off its second summer semester, reports enrollment this season is up 7.1% over 2021 and 5.9% from before the pandemic. The increase is attributed in part to students taking advantage of state programs that help with tuition costs.
Grand Rapids Community College has named Salvador Lopez, a GRCC graduate with extensive involvement in education and community support, to fill a board seat vacated by Kathy Crosby. Lopez runs the nonprofit KConnect, which focuses on ensuring all children have an equitable path to economic prosperity.
In its continued effort to keep education within reach for area students, the Grand Rapids Community College board is freezing tuition rates for the 2021-22 academic year. GRCC also is continuing its waiver of online class fees for the fall semester.
More than 1,100 students are attending Grand Rapids Community College through the Michigan Reconnect program. Participants in the program, which has accepted 70,000 Michiganders statewide, can work toward an associate degree or a career skills certificate — in some cases tuition-free.
Classes remain available during Grand Rapids Community College’s second seven-week summer semester, which starts June 29. GRCC has availability in programs including computer information systems, business administration, math, biology, and psychology.
Comcast is providing Lift Zones — Wi-Fi hotspots designed to help students get online, participate in distance learning, and do homework — in communities across the country. The first in Holland will be at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland’s South Side location. It’s part of the company’s 10-year, $1 billion investment in closing the digital divide that affects many low-income families.
