Chobani expansion gains approval, bringing jobs and growth to Muskegon

What’s happening: One of the largest economic development projects in Muskegon County history continues to gain momentum following state approval advancing Chobani’s proposed $567 million expansion of its La Colombe plant in the city of Norton Shores. 

The project – expected to create nearly 340 jobs on top of 312 existing jobs – reached a major milestone with an initial incentive approval from the Michigan Strategic Fund, bringing the development one step closer to construction.  

Why’s it important: This expansion will enlarge the footprint of La Colombe, which was acquired by Chobani – America’s No. 1 yogurt brand – in 2023 as part of its strategy to enter the coffee market with a more nutritious product. The project would increase capacity, adding 200,000 square feet of space at its facility in Norton Shores, which will operate as a large-scale, 24/7 production hub for La Colombe’s ready-to-drink lattes.

What’s next: As part of the expansion, infrastructure investments are needed to support increased production capacity, enabling La Colombe to go from about 30 million pounds of milk processed annually to an estimated 615 million pounds. This increase will bolster Michigan’s dairy operations while significantly increasing demand for waste treatment at the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center. The Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved a $28 million Strategic Site Readiness Program award toward initial phases of the county and city’s estimated $64.5 million infrastructure upgrades that will support the company and provide improvements needed to unlock broader community and economic growth.

What’s the impact: Local and state leaders say the economic ripple effect of the project will be substantial, with the creation of nearly 340 jobs and an increased demand for not just milk, but transportation, packaging, and other areas within the regional supply chain.
