The expansion will grow La Colombe’s footprint after its 2023 acquisition by Chobani, the nation’s top yogurt brand, as part of a push into the coffee market with more nutritious offerings.

What’s happening: One of the largest economic development projects in Muskegon County history continues to gain momentum following state approval advancing Chobani’s proposed $567 million expansion of its La Colombe plant in the city of Norton Shores.

The project – expected to create nearly 340 jobs on top of 312 existing jobs – reached a major milestone with an initial incentive approval from the Michigan Strategic Fund, bringing the development one step closer to construction.

Why’s it important: This expansion will enlarge the footprint of La Colombe, which was acquired by Chobani – America’s No. 1 yogurt brand – in 2023 as part of its strategy to enter the coffee market with a more nutritious product. The project would increase capacity, adding 200,000 square feet of space at its facility in Norton Shores, which will operate as a large-scale, 24/7 production hub for La Colombe’s ready-to-drink lattes.

What they’re saying: “This project represents a defining moment for Muskegon County,” says Trevor Friedeberg, president and CEO of the Greater Muskegon Economic Development. “And it’s one we’ve been building toward for years. There’s a reason companies like La Colombe and Chobani are choosing to invest here. We offer the infrastructure, the water and wastewater capacity, and the skilled workforce needed to support large-scale manufacturing, along with an unparalleled quality of life. Just as important, we have the people in Norton Shores and across Muskegon County who make projects like this possible, supported by a strong foundation in our food and beverage industry. This is a strong vote of confidence in our community, and we’re proud to help move a project of this magnitude forward.”

What’s next: As part of the expansion, infrastructure investments are needed to support increased production capacity, enabling La Colombe to go from about 30 million pounds of milk processed annually to an estimated 615 million pounds. This increase will bolster Michigan’s dairy operations while significantly increasing demand for waste treatment at the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center. The Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved a $28 million Strategic Site Readiness Program award toward initial phases of the county and city’s estimated $64.5 million infrastructure upgrades that will support the company and provide improvements needed to unlock broader community and economic growth.

What’s the history: “La Colombe has been making ready-to-drink lattes in Norton Shores for more than a decade, and from day one this community has welcomed us with open arms,” says Hamdi Ulukaya, founder and CEO of Chobani. “There’s something special here — in the hardworking spirit of the people, in the pride of Michigan’s farmers who produce high-quality, delicious, farm-fresh milk, in the way neighbors show up for one another. That kind of richness is rare and reminds us what makes Michigan so special. For us, growth means more than numbers — it’s about supporting the community, creating opportunity, and building something that lasts. This is just the beginning of a beautiful journey together in West Michigan, and we’re committed to being part of it for many years to come.”

What’s the impact: Local and state leaders say the economic ripple effect of the project will be substantial, with the creation of nearly 340 jobs and an increased demand for not just milk, but transportation, packaging, and other areas within the regional supply chain.

“The impact that this investment will have on the city of Norton Shores is monumental,” Norton Shores Mayor Gary Nelund says. “The leadership at La Colombe/Chobani has shown through this entire process how much it cares for its employees, its products, and the community. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship as the company expands in Norton Shores.”

Why’s this important to the state: “Companies know that they succeed when they invest in Michigan,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says. “I want to thank Chobani for working with us to create 337 good-paying jobs and invest $567 million here in Michigan’s local economy. It shows the world that Michigan is the best place to grow stuff and build a thriving agricultural economy. From the dairy farms to the production floor and the shelves of our grocery stores, let’s keep working together to help more workers, businesses, and families make it in Michigan.”

What it will mean for the county: “This project is a testament to the strong collaboration between the city of Norton Shores,  Greater Muskegon Economic Development, and Muskegon County and to what our region has to offer: robust infrastructure, a beautiful location, and a shared commitment to long‑term economic growth,” says Mark Eisenbarth, Muskegon County administrator.
