4-part series explores causes of poverty and tools for change

A four-part Lunch and Learn series aims to explore the causes of poverty and tools for change.

Hosted by the city of Holland’s Human Relations Commission, the series, “Bridges Out of Poverty,” is slated for noon to 1 p.m. at Herrick District Library, on Wednesdays, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, 10, and 17. 

This free community training is based on Dr. Ruby K. Payne’s research and teaching on understanding the dynamics that cause and maintain poverty from the individual to the systemic level. 

Todd Krygsheld, executive director of Escape Ministries and a certified trainer for Bridges Out of Poverty, will lead the training.  

Bridges Out of Poverty is intended for employers, community organizations, social service agencies, educators, health care providers, courts, and law enforcement.

“As a result of the training, participants will develop a greater appreciation for their community, seeing it through new eyes, be able to distinguish between generational and situational poverty, and discover new tools to foster relationships of mutual respect and understanding. All of this will have an impact on programs, policies, and services throughout the Holland community,” says Krygsheld.
