Area community foundations give out $910,000 at Scholarship Ice Cream Social

This year, the GHACF, in collaboration with the Allendale Community Foundation and Coopersville Area Community Foundation, awarded more than $910,000 in scholarships to 234 area students.

The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation (GHACF)  has added two new board members, Cindy Moe and Peter Haines.

There’s something for everyone coming up: summer reading challenges, a sand sculpture contest, chalk art, a heritage festival, the Lakeshore HBA Parade of Homes, Pride events, and a quilt exhibit.

Get ready for a jam-packed Saturday as Muskegon’s largest winter festival returns on Feb. 3 to Downtown Muskegon. Activities include ax-throwing, a bloody mary contest, snow volleyball, and the ever-popular cornhole tournament.

The air is brisk and the events are plentiful. February brings Snowfest, a cello quartet, a journalism exhibit, a murder mystery, and a celebration of the art of Black hair.

All-terrain wheelchair loan program opens outdoors to more users

The GRIT wheelchair can go across all terrains standard wheelchairs can’t, and a West Michigan family who knows the constraints of conventional wheelchair use has created a program to allow the public borrow two of them.

Independence Day is celebrated across the country, and the Lakeshore is no exception. Fireworks will streak across the sky in many Lakeshore communities. July events also include LAUP’s Fiesta, theater, garden walks, and street performances.

There are many things to do along the Lakeshore in May, from Tulip Time in Holland to the annual Kite Festival in Grand Haven. There are also plays, concerts, exhibits, a craft fair, an adventure run and Memorial Day observances.

Lori's Voice is an all-volunteer nonprofit founded to help young people with disabilities. Founder Lori Hastings remembers what it was like growing up a neurological disorder. Now, she's making sure other challenged youth have what they need.
