Things to do in May: Festivals, exhibits, shows, Memorial Day observances

There are many things to do along the Lakeshore in May, from Tulip Time in Holland to the annual Kite Festival in Grand Haven. There are also plays, concerts, exhibits, a craft fair, an adventure run and Memorial Day observances.

However, tulips were first discovered wild in the mountainous area where China, Tibet and Afghanistan converge. They have graced the gardens of the sultans of the Ottoman Empire and become as valuable as currency. Today, they are a stalwart symbol of Holland, Mich., as the "Tulip City."

The concert will include music from Arturo Marquez, Mexico’s most popular living composer, Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz” from “Sleeping Beauty,” two of Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, and one of Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances.
