November things to do: Turkey trots, Thanksgiving, tree lightings, and holiday markets top this list

Enjoy musical programs, dance and theater performances, movies, gingerbread houses, and a girlfriends getaway weekend in Muskegon. Also, the Big Read, Middle Read, and Little Read are in full swing across the Lakeshore.

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
Light Night, one of many holiday season kickoff events across the Lakeshore, is the annual lighting of the Main Street business district and will take place on Nov. 21 on Main Street in Grand Haven. Several others — including tree-lightings in Douglas, Muskegon, and Saugatuck — take place the weekend after Thanksgiving. (Grand Haven website)

November is here. There are lots of opinions about when we should start thinking about, um, we’ll call it that big December celebration. If you’re someone who thinks “the holidays” can’t come quickly enough, you’re in luck.

There are several items — including markets and tree lighting events — in our calendar to help you get in the spirit of the season. And if you want to feel better about indulging in that second serving of Thanksgiving pie, sign up for one of the several turkey trots scheduled this month.

The Great Thanksgiving Banquet will take place again this year in Holland. Libraries across the Lakeshore have plenty of activities planned. There’s also music — including a couple of nights of Brazilian jazz — theater, crafts, discussions about history, art exhibits and events, county park offerings, and a community tree planting in West Michigan.

November offers a wide variety of things to do in Allegan, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties. This list includes options for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or interest.
