A grant for pilot transportation programs will make it easier for people to spend time at Momentum Centers in Holland and Grand Haven.

The Momentum Center is launching a two-month pilot program to provide transportation to its facilities and support programs in Grand Haven and Holland.

The program is funded by a Ottawa Health Equity Council grant program and channeled by the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance, respectively.

The Momentum Center will use the grant to reduce transportation barriers for those who can’t access public transportation in Ottawa County.

“We are excited about this opportunity to see what happens when we overcome the obstacle of transportation. Anything we can do to move people out of isolation and into community is invaluable,” says Barbara Lee VanHorssen, Momentum Center’s executive director and “Experi-Mentor.”

Once weekly to each center

Beginning mid- to late March through May, “Tuesday Transportation” will travel from Zeeland, Jenison, and Hudsonville to the Holland Momentum Center. Likewise, “Thursday Transportation” will move through Holland, West Olive, and Grand Haven Township areas to the Grand Haven Momentum Center.

The two centers serve about 270 members with mental health issues, addictions, and disabilities. If transportation barriers can be resolved, the number of people who can find respite from stigma and marginalization at the Momentum Centers could increase substantially, VanHorssen says.

Anyone who wants to sign up for the transportation program should first apply for a membership, which is $1, and then complete a transportation request.

The Momentum Center aims to create a community where every person is fully visible and connected. For more information, contact VanHorssen, 616-502-2078 or barbara@momentumcentergh.org.
