After launching their custom car accessory business in a Kalamazoo garage, the buddies behind Auto Image relocated to small-town Plainwell, where their business has been growing. This month, the company took part in the Michigan International Auto Show in Grand Rapids.
Across the Great Lakes basin scientists and planners are pivoting to re-examine alternative drainage systems and to address barriers — including obsolete data — that may stand in the way of innovative, sustainable green designs that could help alleviate flooding.
Wayland is among Michigan’s small downtowns working to improve their cores to attract new residents, businesses and tourists. The Allegan County community's location off U.S. 131, between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, and its proximity to the expanding Gun Lake Casino, make it an easy destination for people to visit.
“This is a dream that has been in the works for over 20 years, and we are so excited to finally be able to share the Armintrout-Milbocker Nature Preserve with everyone,” says an official for the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy.
“It has been wonderful to hear the stories of families being able to enjoy the beaches and trails together for the first time. The stories go on and on,” says Michelle O'Kelly, coordinator for DNR Fund and Resource Development.
The new Armintrout-Milbocker Nature Preserve in Allegan, named for the two Allegan families who owned the land for generations, features three miles of Kalamazoo River frontage and 100 upland acres of mostly pine and oak forest, fringed with 40 acres of diverse wetlands.
At least 21 states, including Michigan, are trying to stop the spread of zebra mussels and related invasives found in moss balls intended for aquariums.
