Allegan County hosts transportation open house

Allegan County Transportation is inviting the public to an open house to celebrate its growth, additions to the fleet, new technology, and expanded opportunities to serve residents.
The event will be held on Friday, May 10, from 4-7 p.m. at its facility at 750 Airway Drive in Allegan. Visitors can tour the facility, meet staff, and learn more about the technology used in transit operations.
The county recently purchased seven propane-powered buses that will enable it to meet air quality goals, lower fuel and maintenance costs, and reduce ownership costs.
In addition, last year Allegan County joined with six other transit agencies to research the best technology to improve service delivery and reliability, says Whitney Ehresman, transportation director.
Showing off scheduling app

“The new scheduling software, which includes a mobile application for passengers, will significantly improve the rider experience,” Ehresman says. “We are excited to showcase this new technology at our open house.”
The scheduling phone app started on Feb. 27.
“As we strive to foster a healthier and more resilient Allegan County, the launch of the Via App helps propel us toward a future where access to vital services is more equitable and readily available to all,” says Lauren Hunt-VanderPloeg, community impact officer at the Allegan County Community Foundation.
Allegan County Transportation has been serving county residents since June 2000. Since then, the agency has expanded countywide, adding service hours, staff, and vehicles.
The largest expansion of service began in January 2022, when the Allegan County Board of Commissioners increased funding after public transit was identified as a need in a countywide survey. Curb-to-curb service is available until 7 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A ride reservation must be made by noon the business day prior to service.
